Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have a Control Panel?

Yes. We are a fully managed host and 99% of our customers never visit a control panel more than once or twice. Since we do it all, why bother? Yet, each account includes its own full-strength WHM cPanel control panel which, this is provided mostly as a convenience--especially for new clients moving from other hosts who are still in the habit of setting things up themselves--or for power users who want to retain control.

In addition to all of the WHM cPanel tools we provide a fully-functioning, automated installer and backup snapshot tool called Softaculous. Here, you'll see a history of documented backup snapshots (and any staging sites) that our technicians employ when they perform all kinds of maintenance to your site.

For things like email account set up our account customer service GPowerHost Portal has many of the same services and is less complicated to use. In our GPowerHost Portal area you can:

  • View your billing history or pay an invoice
  • Order new services
  • Upgrade any existing services to plans with more power (we'll suggest when this may be a good idea)
  • Downgrade when you feel you are over-resourced (likewise, we'll suggest when this may be a good idea!)
  • Cancel all kinds of services or your account
  • Transfer or Register a New Domain
  • Open, answer or review your support tickets
  • Read our support documentation
  • Read our support news
  • Add additional users so that more than one in your organization can use the portal or cPanel
  • Control your email preferences
  • Review any past messages from us
  • Login to your cPanel interface
  • View basic or advanced statistics
  • Perform additional backups
  • Manage your Enterprise Grade Email accounts, Forwarders and Autoresponders
  • Browse all of your files
  • Manage your Domains
  • And much more!

Feel free to use either our GPowerHost Portal, WHM cPanel or just open a ticket and tell us what you need and we'll handle the nitty-gritty! Don't let us discourage you if you want to get your hands dirty and learn to do it yourself, we'll be happy to walk you through any of the hundreds of things that can be done from our control panels, just ask!

Is this Shared Hosting or are these VPS?

Neither! Each of our hosting plans is built upon a foundation of CloudLinux 7 and their Elastic Site account type--which is a greatly improved hybrid of the best of both of these other two kinds of antiquated account types: Shared Hosting and VPS (Virtual Private Servers). On top of this, we build our own servers and infrastructure and then we greatly expand upon that by adding our own proprietary stacks (highly specialized technology and customization combinations).

We started by combining the best aspects of VPS', like:

  • Separation of user files and services
  • Control over things like: programing languages and versions
  • Greater speed
  • On-demand extra resources
  • No risk of bad neighbors spoiling a good thing
  • Ability to have sophisticated security
  • Greater backup protection and options

Then, we engineered the conveniences of Shared Hosting like:

  • Ease of use
  • No need for any expensive licenses
  • Everything already set up
  • Everything hardened
  • Email Server and reputation managed by the hosting company
  • All patches and updates handled immediately by experts
  • Less chance of things going wrong
  • No overhead--requires less memory, CPU and hard drive space
  • Inexpensive when compared to Managed VPS
And, finally, we added our own things like:
  • Engineered for E-Commerce and your critical shops, service and support site needs
  • Higher degree of customization than either hosting or VPS
  • 24/7 Uptime Monitoring (every 60 seconds) and daily inspection of your site and logs by an engineer that knows your site
  • Highly optimized server stacks that are geared toward one or combinations of these: WordPress, WooCommerce, GiveWP Give, or PeepSo
  • Better and more secure isolation from other users than even VPS
  • Email administration by experts and outgoing emails delivered by Amazon SES
  • The best Eight Layered Security protocol managed by security professionals using the leading tools and vendors
  • Ability to implement custom plans for users with unique needs--within minutes--at fair prices
  • All traffic served lightening fast with no impact during peak periods
  • Free evaluation of greater resourced plans (for three days) without added cost
  • Three kinds of backups! All managed by us and the ability to do your own as well.
  • The very fastest servers with the highest performing components
  • High Availability, Solid State Hard Drives
  • Free periodic site optimization and SEO tuning
  • No need for all of the security, SEO and backup plugins--we've build these things on the server level
  • A network and servers that are Faster than competitors without any need for CDN's (except in rare cases--we test and let you know if a CDN is warranted)
  • Infrastructure that is not ever over utilized to reduce heat
  • Green power and partnerships with activist organizations to triple offset any minimal carbon footprint wielding a net positive environmental impact
  • A can do and can fix it attitude!

What's more, we have a host of reasonably priced extra support options to meet all of your needs and to free up your time to focus on your site, organization, mission and clientele!

Are your servers secure from all of these new hosting threats?

We are always 100% patched and have implemented all best practices against all known and likely vulnerabilities! While many hosting companies operate well patched infrastructures, there are two new classes of vulnerabilities that pose significant hurdles that many are not willing to fully and completely address:

  1. Microarchitectural Data Sampling (MDS) vulnerabilities, like: ZombieLoad and MDSUM—where attackers are able to see data inside the CPU—are a very new and extremely serious global hosting threat. Recently, four of these attacks were disclosed:

Simply patching hardware/software is NOT enough to mitigate this threat and if a hosting companies' server CPUs are made by Intel® after 2010 AND if they have Intel Hyper-Threading Technology enabled the host IS vulnerable!

Because these attacks take an exploited user to implement the issue isn't one that the well maintained and careful single user/dedicated hosts/desktop computer users will likely fully mitigate. If a single user keeps their computer squeaky clean they might not see the need to cripple the computing power with the fixes.

In a shared environment, where infections are common—even if quickly cleaned up—only a full mitigation would be prudent. Why? Because the vulnerability is so pervasive that certainly new exploits will continue to occur and full mitigation is the only way to be sure.

If you ask many in the industry if they are vulnerable they will point to patching, which is ONLY part of the fix. It is being widely and incorrectly reported that Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT) is only needed until a patch is available. However, to date and for the foreseeable future, no patch will fully mitigate the threat while SMT is still enabled. This costly and inconvenient truth has left many hosts silent/evasive on the issue.

As of May, 2019 we surveyed 50 hosting companies and could only find two brands (the same hosting company)—other than GPowerHost–that was accurately claiming to be fully mitigated. Most refused to answer questions about the threat or gave false and misleading information about their vulnerability. This means that around 96% of all hosts with Intel CPUs are vulnerable to at least the worse of these threats.

It seems that in the new era of Trump, one can now get away with lying and sticking to the lye or just evolving it as you go along—as long as you always maintain the false underlying premise folks just won't care about the truth—they are too besieged by false information to react.

Being one of the 4% who have fully disabled Intel Hyper-Threading Technology was no small feat. We were aware of the impending classes of threats and had started a year ago to expand our architecture to allow rapid mitigation of future disasters like these. Since we are not a discount host (we are super expensive either!) we are able to plan ahead and take all proactive, protective and prophylactic steps and plan for unforeseen disasters.

So, why would so many hosts remain vulnerable? Likely, many will eventually do something about this, however, disabling the Intel Hyper-Threading Technology means that a hosting company would instantly have half of the CPU cores (shared cores, that is) than they previously had. Since many hosting companies heavily pack their servers to densities where the available CPU cores are sometimes utilized to around 80% or more, turning off Intel Hyper-Threading Technology would bring all of their servers to a screeching halt. Furthermore, the cost and the amount of resources needed to go out and double the number of servers a hosting company has would mean they would no longer be profitable.

While we could not know that this particular threat would be found, we were certain that Intel (and some others to a lesser degree) had for over a decade cut corners and global hosting catastrophe was imminent. To date, few, if any, real world cybercriminals and unscrupulous governments are thought to have leveraged these exploits, however, since the payoff is so giant it is certain that they are hard at work—spending hundreds of thousands of dollars—crafting those exploits right now.

  2. Other CPU side-channel vulnerabilities, like: speculative execution attacks, such as Spectre, Meltdown and Foreshadow represent still further vulnerabilities in modern processors like Intel, AMD and ARM processors. These are nasty bugs indeed, but so far there are mitigations that while difficult to protect against when they were announced have fixes that aren't too hard to swallow. Many high quality hosting companies have mitigations fully in place.
